Le Pouvoir des Cauchemars : la montée de la politique de la peur (The Power of Nightmares) est un documentaire produit par la BBC qui s’applique à démontrer qu’Al-Qaida n’existe pas et que l’idée d’une menace terroriste globale « est un fantasme qui a été exagéré et déformé par les hommes politiques. C’est une sombre illusion qui s’est répandue sans être débattue auprès des gouvernements du monde entier, des services de sécurité et des médias internationaux ». Réalisé par Adam Curtis, qui est reconnu comme étant le meilleur documentariste en Grande Bretagne, Le Pouvoir des Cauchemars explique comment et pourquoi le fantasme Al-Qaida fut créé, qui en bénéficie, et pourquoi il résiste si bien à l’épreuve du temps. Il a reçu plusieurs prix et fut présenté hors compétition au festival de Cannes 2005. Dans sa version intégrale, Le Pouvoir des Cauchemars dure près de 3 heures et remonte aux origines de l'islamisme et du néo-conservatisme. Il fut initialement diffusé sur BBC2 en octobre 2004, découpé en une série de 3 épisodes. Nous vous proposons ici un montage de ce documentaire, d’une durée de 32 minutes. A propos du réalisateur : Adam Curtis a reçu le prix de la persistance du regard du Golden Gate au San Francisco International Film Festival (2005), et le Alan Clarke Award (2006). Il enseigna les sciences politiques à l'université d'Oxford avant de se lancer dans une carrière à la télévision.

Power and Terror: Noam Chomsky in our Times gives the public a rare opportunity to see and listen to one of the most articulate, committed and hard-working political dissidents of our time, MIT linguist and political philosopher Noam Chomsky.

Chomsky has been called “the most important intellectual alive,” by the New York Times, yet he has generally been ignored by the mainstream in America. Recently, in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Chomsky found himself called upon to provide much-needed analysis and historical perspective regarding this moment in American histteory.  In the months following 9/11, Chomsky gave dozens of talks on four continents, conducted scores of media interviews, and published a book called 9-11 - a surprise bestseller in some of the 22 countries in which it was published.

Chomsky remains a steadfast critic of United States foreign policy and presents his often unpopular, but always incisive arguments, based on decades of research and analysis, ultimately contextualizing recent events in light of the history of Imperialism.

Chomsky places the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in the context of American foreign intervention throughout the postwar decades - in Vietnam, Central America, the Middle East, and elsewhere. Beginning with the fundamental principle that the exercise of violence against civilian populations is terror, Chomsky-in stark and uncompromising terms-challenges the United States to apply to its own actions the moral standards it demands of others.
